Who Drives the Boat Once It Is in the Water? They Need to Be Listed.
A lot of owners think as long as the person hauling and launching is on the policy, everyone is fine. No. Anyone who regularly touches the boat, or could, goes on the policy. We make sure every box is checked before the first weekend at the lake.
Seasonal payment option, trailer coverage standard, custom valuation for upgraded motors, and guest coverage for everyone aboard.
Boat insurance follows a structure similar to motorcycle and ATV coverage: bodily injury, guest coverage, comprehensive, collision, and a trailer, since you have to pull it. Trailer coverage comes standard, listed by serial number with the boat.
Boats get a few more questions than other toys. Where is it stored, a marina or your garage? Has anything been added? Do you race it? The answers change the risk and the valuation, and we would rather ask them now than at claim time.
What it covers
What does boat insurance cover?
Bodily injury and guest coverage
Liability for injuries you cause on the water, with coverage for friends and family aboard.
The boat, at a valuation you set
Our system estimates value from the serial number. If you have put a $60,000 motor in it or upgraded it, we adjust the valuation to match.
Trailer, standard
The trailer is listed with the boat by serial number and covered while you haul.
Comprehensive and collision
Theft, fire, and damage, including storm damage, which typically runs through your comprehensive deductible.
Where it is parked
Coverage extends to the marina or your garage. We specify the storage location so the risk is rated correctly.

In Jonathan's words
What Our Sales Manager Tells Every Caller
“You can either pay in full for the year, or you pay six months only for the year, and then six months you do not have a payment. A lot of people are like, "Hey, it is seasonal."”
“If she is listed, yes she is covered. If someone is going to touch the boat in any way, regularly or could possibly have access to it, we need them on the policy. You have to make sure every box is checked.”
This page is based on a recorded interview with our Sales Manager, Jonathan Sambrano, lightly edited for clarity. Figures are examples he gave and will vary by policy.
A seasonal payment option
Pay in full for the year, or pay over six months and carry no payment the other six. A lot of owners like that it matches the season.
Valuation is a conversation
We show you what the system thinks the boat is worth and ask if that sounds right. If you have done a bunch of work to it, we adjust.
The racing question gets asked
If you race, we ask the right questions up front to make sure that use is actually covered.
Good to know
Good to know before you call
- List every operator, including a spouse who only drives once the boat is in the water.
- Storm damage typically ties into your comprehensive deductible. An adjuster will consider whether warnings were issued and whether the loss was avoidable.
- Unlike our motorcycle policy, there is no built-in death indemnity benefit on a boat policy.
Bundle and save
Put the boat with your auto and home
Boats are expensive. Bundling the boat with the auto and home you already insure with us is the simplest way to bring the total down. Ask your agent what the multi-policy discount does.
FAQ
Boat insurance questions we hear
If she is listed, yes. Anyone who regularly operates the boat, or could, needs to be on the policy.
Yes. Guest coverage is part of the policy and matters any time someone other than your household is aboard.
Generally yes, through your comprehensive deductible. The adjuster will look at whether warnings were issued and whether the loss could have been avoided.
The system estimates from the serial number. We ask whether that sounds right, and if you have upgraded the motor or added equipment, we adjust the valuation together.
