Flip the Roles. If They Hit You, Would You Settle for Whatever They Have?
You would want all of it. So would the person you hit. A personal umbrella policy is the final safety net above your auto and home liability: $1,000,000 to $5,000,000 of coverage, with attorneys on standby, for roughly $70 a month at the first tier.
$1M–$5M
umbrella coverage available above your auto and home
A $1,000,000 to $5,000,000 safety net above your auto and home liability, with attorneys on standby, for about $70 a month.
Jonathan views a personal umbrella policy, or PUP, as the final safety net. Picture an umbrella you are holding up. When the rain comes down, it hits the umbrella and everything else falls beside you. The policy starts at one million dollars and goes up to five million.
It covers the drivers on your auto policy, including a 16-year-old who just got a license. It covers dog bites. And it comes with the carrier’s attorneys on standby if you are sued.
What it covers
What does an umbrella policy cover?
Liability above your auto policy
When a serious accident exceeds your auto limits, the umbrella pays the rest, up to $1,000,000 or more.
Liability above your home or renters policy
An injury on your property that outruns your home liability limit lands on the umbrella next.
Every listed driver
Including teenagers. One client’s 17-year-old caused roughly $700,000 in damage in a serious accident. The umbrella picked it up.
Dog bites
A client was blamed for a bite even though her dog never left the house. Her umbrella covered her.
Attorneys on standby
Legal defense through the carrier when a claim becomes a lawsuit.

What Our Sales Manager Tells Every Caller
“I told my customer, "Sir, God forbid you wreck into somebody else and they want to sue you. Now flip the roles. They hit you, your kid is in the hospital, your wife is in the hospital. Would you sue them for just whatever they have, or would you want all of it?" He stayed quiet. Yeah, you want all of it. This is why an umbrella is important.”
“Someone told me their 17-year-old daughter got into a really bad accident. She was okay, but the other person was not, and it was about $700,000 worth of damage. That could have set the kid back for years, and the umbrella picked it up.”
This page is based on a recorded interview with our Sales Manager, Jonathan Sambrano, lightly edited for clarity. Figures are examples he gave and will vary by policy.
A million dollars for about $70 a month
At the first tier, the cost is small compared to the coverage. Jonathan calls it one of the most underrated things in insurance.
It protects the people you love most
Teen drivers are the ones most likely to need it, and the ones whose futures it protects.
It only works when everything is in one place
Your home (or renters) and auto both have to be with us so we can confirm the underlying limits qualify.
Good to know
What do you need to qualify?
- Your auto policy needs high bodily injury limits. Ask us about the per-person and per-accident limits required.
- Your home or renters policy needs at least $300,000 in liability.
- Your home (or renters) and auto both have to be insured with us. You cannot have the home here and the auto somewhere else.
Bundle and save
The umbrella requires your home and auto to be bundled
An umbrella can only be written when your home or renters policy and your auto policy are both with us, so we know the underlying coverage is good. Bundle first, then add the umbrella on top.
